Origine
Originating from the
Marneth family, the so-called Marneth group has developed into a
flourishing society with a membership that has, for a long time,
consisted of more than just family members. The society currently
numbers about 30 active permanent members. All through the year
these people are busy constructing a float for the annual
parade. Moreover, they are working on the maintenance of the dahlia
bulbs and fields. Young people form an essential part of the parade.
Every year we have participated in the parade with at least one
float for the young. This wagon is designed by youth members, if
necessary, with the assistance of other members. The young are also
responsible for sticking on the flowers in the weekend of the
parade. In this they are supported by a special youth supervisor who
is a member as well. During the weekend of the parade, the number of
assistants may amount to as much as 100.
Famille
In its present form the
society was founded in 1993 during the annual meeting of the
Marneths in January. It was at this meeting that the idea of taking
part in the flower parade was launched. The overall enthusiasm that
followed resulted in participation in the Lichtenvoorde parade with
the first large and impressive float. It was built in an assembling
hall of Magis Ltd., a transport concern on the
Weyenborgerdijk. The
participants were so pleased with what they were working on that
they decided to look for a permanent building site. And so a romney
pilot was purchased which, with their kind permission, could be
placed on the premises of Lesli Ltd. for years to come. At present
we are using a piece of land on the Derde Broekdijk. Here the very
same romney pilot was rebuilt in 2000.
Fondateur
It turns out that this is
not the first float to be built by the Marneth family. In 1965 Frits
Marneth and Jopie Gries took the initiative to take part in the
parade with a small-sized wagon. It proved to be an eventful start.
A great deal of effort was put into the making. All this was
rewarded with a well-deserved first prize in the category
"small-sized wagons". However, owing to an organizational error,
this first prize was not awarded until after the Lichtenvoorde fair.
When the prizes were presented, the family had to make do with a
third place. It goes without saying that a storm of indignation
broke loose. We are not sure whether this is why it took almost 30
years for the next float to be built. No matter what, we still
consider Frits Marneth to be the founder of our present-day society.
